Forklift Safety Rules and Tips
Within the US, 20,000 people are hurt each year in accidents related to the use of forklifts. And every year roughly 100 deaths are caused by forklift accidents. Fortunately, proper training regarding maintenance and operation procedures could significantly reduce the risk of accidents. The following basic safety rules and suggestions should be followed whenever utilizing a forklift.
Training
The employer is responsible for making sure that workers are trained to operate a forklift and have undergone a proper training program. Training includes a combination of presentations, lectures, practical hands-on training and discussions. Reevaluation must occur every three years. Forklift operators must be up-to-date with current forklift safety rules. Forklift training program content covers dangers of forklift operations, general workplace hazards, workplace surfaces and lighting, and dangers connected to operating the specific forklift which the worker will be utilizing. An employee must be 18 years of age or over to utilize a forklift.
Maintenance
In order to make certain that the machinery is functioning safely and properly, forklift inspection should be done every day. The inspection involves keeping a checklist of things and reporting any concerns right away.
The Work Place
Having a safe and clean workplace is vital in the safe operation of a forklift. A work site that is safe means establishing "traffic lanes" which are designated for forklift use only. Warning systems such as flashing lights and horns must be in place to be able to indicate when there is an approaching forklift. Forklift docking stations must be kept in good repair and inspected on a daily basis.
General Guidelines
Included in the general safety guidelines of using a forklift are respecting the forklift load capacity and never exceeding the maximum; avoiding known hazards on the ground, such as wet spots or oil spills; ensuring there is enough clearance for the load; lowering or raising the load only while the forklift is stationary; and keeping legs, hands and arms inside the vehicle during operation.
