Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric forklifts should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures should always be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be located close to the charging place. The path to the station should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Do not allow things like lighters or matches to be used while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place correctly ventilated. The recharging method can release gas. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
